School Tours InfoArms of Australia Inn MuseumActivities for SchoolsThe Arms of Australia Inn museum was set up by the Nepean District Historical Society in 1976 as a place were people could come and see items and photos from the early days of the colony. The museum contains thousands of artefacts dating from the 1790’s to the 1960’s and all have been used or manufactured in the local area. Our philosophy is to make history a living experience and to this end we have set up a range of hands on activities for school groups. Depending on their size groups are generally broken down in to small groups and each group is given a different activity to do for up to 15 mins. There are up to 9 different activities that can be arranged. At any one time 100 students can be accommodated, however if you have larger groups they can be split into two sessions and spaced 2 hours apart as has been done with previous schools. Activities Include
The Dairy: Students are shown how farmers use to milk their cows and are able to churn cream into butter using the old hand churn along with cheese moulds and milk churns for transporting milk to the local factory.
Washing: Once again you get to hand wash using scrub boards and old hand made soap. Along with the hand crank washing machines and the old fashioned clothes mangle to wring out the clothes.
Barn : Students see how the blacksmith was the heart of a community with his shop making and repairing all the old equipment. Along with how crops were harvested and using the old grindstone to sharpen the farm implements.
Games : Old fashioned games were a part of life. Students will get to play these including horse shoe throwing and coits.
Parlour: See how they enjoyed their evening at home with the old foot pump organ and the old fashion gramophone, the old Singer sewing machine and children's toys.
Foyer : As the area was originally a prison farm we have the old convict leg shackles and the old ball and chain. We also have a fully operational plug to plug telephone switchboard, connected to phones around the museum.
Millennium room : See those things that are today considered an oddity, including the old apple corer, moustache cup, collar box, fly paper and old adding machines and typewriter.
Bedroom : See the old horsehair stuffed mattress and the old gazunder that sits under the bed along with the old steamer trunks and night stand for washing up in the morning.
Schoolroom : What was it like to write with the old quill and ink? Or perhaps the old slate board and slate pencils, or even the old dip pens and inks, while sitting at an original old school desk.
